Local Doctor Recognized Nationally as a Young Leader
February 6, 2009
Boston The American Medical Association, AMA Foundation announced the 30 recipients of the 2009 AMA Foundation Leadership Awards. Presented in association with Pfizer Inc, this award recognizes medical students, residents and fellows and early career physicians for their non clinical leadership skills in organized medicine, education, public health or community service. Spaulding Rehabilitation Network and Harvard Medical School Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation's Dr. Rosalyn Nguyen was selected out of thousands of nominees as a leader in the Resident and Fellows category. Rosalyn's stellar academic record, dedication to excellence, and her desire to further her achievements have helped her excel at Spaulding and Harvard Medical School's Department of PM and R. Never one to sit idle, she has given lectures within Harvard's PM and R residency on topics including spinal cord injury and Virtual Reality Rehabilitation while conducting research on Traumatic Brain Injury and the use of the Nintendo Wii in stroke rehabilitation.

'We encourage all of our doctors to not only be leaders in clinical care but also become leaders and good neighbors in the communities we all are a part of. Rosalyn is truly a shining example of the type of leadership we as physicians need to have in 21st century medicine. Balancing a demanding clinical case load, a deep commitment to research and education and reaching out to the broader community. Spaulding and Harvard are honored to have Dr. Nguyen as part of our program and as an example of the high quality physicians this program is producing,' said Dr. Ross Zafonte, VP of Medicine at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network and Chair of the Harvard Medical School Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Dr. Nguyen is also an active community leader, supporting the Committee on Young Physicians, Massachusetts Medical Society, Boston Cares, and the Boston Ivy Alumni Group. With a sports medicine interest, she has provided medical coverage for the 2008 Boston Marathon and the 2008 Special Olympics Summer Games at Harvard. Rosalyn's dedication to pursuing her education, while fostering the education of others has made her a vital member of the Spaulding physician community.

'Through actions such as leading a free clinic, changing health policy, conducting cutting-edge research or volunteering on a global level, these men and women have shown tremendous potential for joining the next generation of medical leaders," said Jean Howard, president of the AMA Foundation. "I am confident that these outstanding individuals will provide the necessary leadership to improve health care delivery in our country.'

The Leadership Awards are part of the AMA Foundation's Excellence in Medicine Awards program, which will be presented at a dinner on March 9, 2009 in Washington D.C., prior to the AMA National Advocacy Conference.
