Hocoma to Make Historic Gift to Spaulding
July 8, 2009
Boston, MA - With the dawn of the 21st century the promise of robotics assisting in daily lives has never been greater. The medical field especially has truly begun to see the benefits robotics can bring to patients and their ability to recover. At the forefront of robotics in rehabilitative medicine is a partnership between two industry leaders, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and Hocoma. To celebrate this partnership and the promise that future collaborations hold, Gery Colombo CEO of Hocoma will be at Spaulding's main campus, Thursday July 9th at 6pm to present a donation to Spaulding's Motion Analysis Lab to fund further research.

"The ability to collaborate with centers of excellence like Spaulding in the development of our therapy solutions has allowed us to create technology that truly addresses the needs of clinicians and patients as well as unlock new avenues for recovery," said Gery Colombo CEO of Hocoma. Spaulding's internationally recognized Motion Analysis Lab was the perfect proving ground for Hocoma to work with. Dr. Paolo Bonato, director of the lab worked closely with developers at Hocoma to create the Lokomat and ensure its effectiveness in a rehab setting. Since its initial launch the Lokomat is now used in dozens of hospitals nationally. The Motion Analysis lab and Hocoma have since partnered on other innovative therapies such as the virtual technology based bio feedback device the Armeo (developed with collaboration between Spaulding, Hocoma, MIT and Harvard).

"The promise unlocked by robotic therapies has the ability to revolutionize rehabilitative medicine. Spaulding is extremely proud to play such an integral part of its development with an industry leader such as Hocoma. Our gifted clinicians and researchers are using these devices to literally rewrite the meaning of recovery," said David E. Storto, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital President.

Spaulding was the first hospital in the country with the Pediatric Lokomat and early on Dr. Paolo Bonato, and Dr. Donna Nimec saw its potential for children with Cerebral Palsy. Because the machine is user initiated and uses robotics rather than a team of therapists to carry out movement, therapy sessions can go much longer and with greater effectiveness. With a grant from United Cerebral Palsy foundation, Dr. Nimec and Dr. Bonato have been able to carry out a multi-year study that has thus far yielded promising results.

Hocoma's generous gift combined with the strength of their collaborations will further fuel the Spaulding Motion Analysis Lab's ability to continue exploring innovative research models. The Lokomat, Pediatric Lokomat as well as the innovative virtual therapy the Armeo (developed at Spaulding with collaboration with MIT and Harvard) have been featured on media outlets world wide from Time Magazine, PBS, NBC News and the History Channel among many others.
