Pain Rehabilitation Program -- Functional Pain Management
The Spaulding Rehabilitation Network’s Outpatient Centers provide comprehensive Pain Rehabilitation treatment for acute, sub-acute and chronic pain, a service we also call Functional Pain Management.
The Network provides coordinated interdisciplinary pain rehabilitation emphasizing functional improvement and self management of pain. Treatment integrates medical, physical and cognitive-behavioral approaches to pain management.
Our emphasis is on self-management. We help you learn strategies to better manage pain and return to the activities that are truly important to you. We empower you by giving you specific tools to improve function in every aspect of your life, whether it’s returning to work or being able to enjoy leisure activities more comfortably.
Approach to Care
Pain impacts all aspects of a person’s life. You will receive a comprehensive evaluation by a team of specialists. Our interdisciplinary approach includes medical management, psychological support, stress management training, physical and functional rehabilitation. Your program will be tailored to meet your individualized needs.
You are the most important member of the team. Our clinical team will work with you to identify and help you reach functional goals such as increasing tolerance for daily activities, including work, child care and social activities. Treatment also focuses on improving your sleep, mood, and cognitive functioning, and restoring roles and relationships.
Our extensive interdisciplinary team includes physiatrists, physical and occupational therapists, psychologists, massage therapists, nutritionists, psychiatrists and acupuncturists specializing in the management of pain.
We have more than 25 years experience treating a wide variety of pain conditions, including sports injuries, back pain, head and neck pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis, complex regional pain syndrome and reflex sympathetic dystrophy. Our psychiatrists and psychologists specialize in cognitive behavioral therapy and mind-body approaches to managing pain.
Each of the Outpatient Centers of the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network has on-site physiatrists who are experts in pain management and who direct the Functional Pain Management programs.
Research & Innovation
The Spaulding Rehabilitation Network is dedicated to researching new treatments in the field of Pain Management. Our researchers, including physicians and other clinicians, use several cutting-edge treatments to help relieve pain.
Utilizing biofeedback equipment, you can see on the computer screen how your muscles and body are responding. This feedback allows you to control body responses such as muscle guarding and spasm, temperature, and overall levels of physiological arousal. Research has shown biofeedback to be effective in treating headaches, TMJ, back pain, repetitive strain injuries, fibromyalgia, and many other pain conditions.
Adaptive Fitness Equipment
Many people with pain have difficulty exercising on traditional exercise equipment. The Spaulding Network offers adaptive equipment such as the Nu-Step, which allows you to exercise in a comfortable seated position, minimizing stress on your joints.
BTE Work Simulator
The BTE Work Simulator allows you to practice the specific movements to do hundreds of different jobs, ranging from construction worker to chef. You learn how to perform your work tasks in a safe manner that will not increase your pain.
This innovated technique uses a mirror to help re-train your brain to develop a new body map. Research has demonstrated that this technique is effectiveness for phantom limb pain, complex regional pain, and post-stroke rehabilitation.
