Spine Care and Conditioning Program

Spine Care & Conditioning

Persistent neck and back pain can dramatically affect your enjoyment of life. As a leader in rehabilitation, Spaulding Rehabilitation Network can help individuals with different levels of spinal dysfunctions and problems.

The Spaulding Outpatient Centers Spine Care and Conditioning Program incorporates rehabilitation concepts from the most recent spine research. Our physical therapists have extensive experience and advanced education in the management of orthopedic conditions and in spine rehabilitation. Our physicians have extensive training that includes a strong emphasis in neurology, musculoskeletal and sports medicine, rheumatology, and pain management. We also have physiatrists who specialize in Interventional Pain Management and perform x-ray guided spinal injections.

Approach to Care

Spaulding has a multidisciplinary team approach to spine care and conditioning begins with a comprehensive evaluation, where impairments and functional limitations can be addressed, focusing on sources of pain symptoms and muscle imbalance during function. We also take focus on the patient’s individual needs and goals, such as returning to work and leisure activities.

Spaulding’s therapists create an individualized spinal rehabilitation exercise program to help you achieve both short- and long-term rehabilitation goals, and to prevent recurrences of problems. Your physical therapist will help you become adept at performing your prescribed strengthening and exercise program at home.

Treatment of spine disorders typically involves ergonomic training, body mechanics training, mobilizations, manual work, and stabilization techniques. Continued therapy concentrates on developing exercise programs to alleviate symptoms and increase functional movement of the spine, and educating the patient on specific modalities to control spasms. We also concentrate on posture and body mechanic correction to reduce and resolve any current symptoms and reduce the risk of injuring yourself again.

Expertise

Our physicians and therapists are experts in treating injuries, back conditions, and other orthopedic issues that affect the musculoskeletal system. Our spine experts use a whole-body approach for diagnosis and treatment. Care is focused on non-operative solutions to get you back in the game or back to work, safely and without re-injury.

Team members are specially trained in identifying movement abnormalities of your spinal joints, as well as length strength imbalances of your muscular system. Team members have over 25 years experience in spine care and conditioning.

Research & Innovation

Spaulding Rehabilitation Network is dedicated to researching new treatments in the field of spine care and conditioning. Spaulding researchers, including physicians and other clinicians, oversee ongoing research studies and clinical trials such as those listed below.

Research Program
Fluoroscopy

Description
Fluoroscopy is a minimally invasive spine interventional procedure that is considered an effective method of treating acute and chronic painful spine conditions resistant to conservative treatment. Fluroscopy procedures are performed with local anesthesia and within an hour, patients are able to resume daily activities. These spine interventions include Spinal Nerve Root blocks, Transforaminal Epidural injections, Facet Joints Injections, and Radiofrequency Ablations.

Research Program:
Assessing the eLEGS Powered Exoskeleton for Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury

Description:
The eLEGS powered exoskeleton is a device that helps those who have complete or incomplete weakness of both legs after a spinal cord injury, to walk over the ground, to stand and to sit. Ekso Bionics has developed this device for use in the rehabilitation setting. The purpose of this study is to compare the level and extent of the user’s disability with their ability to use the eLEGS device to establish guidelines for its use in a clinical setting. The users will also evaluate the device for ease of use, comfort, trustworthiness and whether it meets expectations.
