Two researchers sit at a desk cluttered with papers and binders, reviewing something on a laptop.Outcomes research seeks to understand the end results of healthcare practices or interventions. By studying healthcare systems in action, we capture a more comprehensive picture of the many factors that play a role over the course of a person’s recovery. Philanthropy to ROCS will help us advance and sustain this work, which will ultimately improve the quality of rehabilitation care.

Giving with Impact

Gifts to Spaulding advance care and research to change lives

Paula Ness Speers and Mark Speers

“This is the largest financial commitment we have ever made to any organization. It speaks to our confidence in the people we have come to know at Spaulding and the important mission of the organization.”

— Paula Ness Speers

Paula Ness Speers, chair of the Spaulding Board of Trustees, and Mark S. Speers made a lead gift of $5 million to establish the Discovery Center for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery at Schoen Adams Research Institute. The Center that bears their names is dedicated to conducting translational research that maximizes mobility and functional improvements for people living with spinal cord injuries, while aggressively pursuing cures for paralysis.

Five women, including Ellen Gordon, pose in front of a sign for the Gordon Center Research Day.

“Spaulding is the ultimate can-do place, where there is nothing that is impossible. A person’s limits are only the beginning, not the ending. Spaulding scientists spend hours in the laboratories researching answers and never give up.”

— Ellen R. Gordon

Ellen Gordon (center) and her late husband, Melvin, established the Ellen R. and Melvin J. Gordon Center for the Cure and Treatment of Paralysis at Spaulding and Harvard Medical School. This cross-institutional initiative is pushing the boundaries of research in its mission to transform our understanding of paralysis.
